This was an impromptu piece that I just felt I had to do. I had been looking at the cube form as a shape to show a contrast against the curvy strata and gouging. However, as an organically minded person, the urge to be curvy, flowing and random had to come out!
Rutile, orange stain and black oxide were mixed into white stoneware clay.
The colours were layered and slammed, layered and slammed until the strata lines were narrow enough. The piece was then shaped into an organic form ( a slug) and then left to harden off a little.
The first gouge into the layers reminded me of a butterfly wing.
Now that the piece has been fired and polished, it resembles bog wood.
It is my husband's favourite piece!
